Time of year:

When are you getting married? Is it in spring when things are still a little muddy and wet, is it in the dead of July when it’s +25 degrees or is it January and you’re possibly fighting a blizzard?? You might be surprised to hear this, but we suggest booking an indoor backup location for photos regardless of the season! Winnipeg’s weather is unpredictable and spending $100.00 on a rental or having a free indoor spot mapped out for peace of mind is worth the effort! Here are a few indoor locations we love:

The Forks/Johnston Terminal

The Manitoba Legislative Building

The Cloakroom

Your favourite restaurant

Birds Hill Park

Leo Mol Sculpture Garden

Canadian Mennonite University

Whatever location your considering make sure to enquire if a booking is required. You can also talk to your photographer and planner, they will have dozens of ideas and locations to suggests.

Wedding Day Timeline

How much time do you have to spare? Are you having a first look earlier in the day to allow 2 - 2.5hours for photos or are you doing all your photos post-ceremony while your guests attend cocktail hour? If your having a first look we suggest doing photos in a unique space that’s completely opposite from your venue style to give you more variety. If you’re having a backyard garden-style wedding, opt for photos in the exchange district for a completely different look and feel. If your reception is taking place at a trendy restaurant, maybe taking photos at Assiniboine Park will give you that more outdoorsy feel so you get the best of both worlds. Whatever you decide make sure you include drive time and allow for a time buffer incase you hit some traffic.

Is it a public or private space

Make sure you consider how accessible is the space is for your wedding party, but also how crowded it may be if it’s a public space. You need to be mindful of who or what might end up in the background of your photos. Don’t forget that someone might also be using the exact spot you want to take photos in, plan ahead as much as you can, book the space if possible, but most importantly remain flexible and have a backup option ready to go!

Remember, think outside the box and always take into consideration our tips listed above to set yourself up for success on your wedding day. If you feel you still need assistance in other areas, make sure to check out our preferred vendors for all your planning needs or attend our Planning with the Pros Workshop.
